The requirements in modern shipbuilding are high – especially when it comes to safety-relevant components such as gusset plates. A current project shows how UnionStahl masters these challenges with precision and quality. A gusset plate for shipbuilding was manufactured from a 350 mm thick plate of grade LR-EH36 with Z35– precisely machined, tested and ready for use at sea.
The starting material was a 350 mm thick, stock sheet with factory-guaranteed mechanical properties. In a first step, blanks were produced using oxy-fuel flame cutting. Controlled preheating is essential to avoid thermal stresses in the material. At UnionStahl, modern infrared preheating systems perform this task – including full documentation.
After cutting, the components were cooled down in a controlled manner. The gusset plate was then milled out of the solid material. Multi-stage processing resulted in a filigree component that meets all technical requirements.
Materials with high toughness and tested quality are essential, especially in shipbuilding. The plates used by UnionStahl offer a guaranteed yield strength of 355 MPa, Z35 quality to prevent fin cracks and ultrasonic testing in accordance with EN 10160 S2E3.
This combination ensures maximum safety in later use – and meets the strict requirements of the maritime industry without any restrictions.
UnionStahl stocks sheet metal up to a thickness of 400 mm with corresponding specifications. This means that even short-term projects can be realized efficiently – with the right material and the corresponding processing from a single source.
Whether gusset plate, carrier plate or special component: UnionStahl stands for precisely manufactured steel components that prove their worth in shipbuilding and other demanding industries.
