Energy Scouts 2026: Apprentices present their "E instead of D" project for CO₂ reduction at UnionStahl.

Sustainability and energy efficiency play an important role at our company – including in training. As part of the Duisburg Chamber of Industry and Commerce’s Energy Scouts 2026 project, we have implemented a practical trainee project on CO₂ reduction in intralogistics.

The aim was to analyze specific savings potential by switching from a diesel forklift to an electric forklift and to evaluate both ecological and economic aspects.

The “E instead of D” project at a glance

The project focused on the question of how CO₂ emissions can be sustainably reduced in the internal material flow.

Objective and idea

Under the project title “E instead of D”, the effects of replacing a 12-ton diesel forklift truck with an electric forklift truck on emissions, energy consumption and costs were investigated.

The aim was to create a sound basis for a possible changeover.

Analysis and profitability comparison

Various forklift models were analyzed, offers were obtained and compared with each other. On this basis, we drew up a detailed cost calculation that took into account investment costs as well as ongoing operating and energy costs.

This enabled us to demonstrate the ecological savings potential as well as the economic feasibility.

Implementation in a team

The project work was structured as a team. Ideas were developed together, continuously coordinated and further elaborated. In addition, workshops held by the Duisburg Chamber of Industry and Commerce supported the methodical project work and provided valuable impetus.

The results were compiled in a presentation and presented at the IHK as part of the Energy Scouts program.

Presentation at the IHK Duisburg

As part of the closing event, various companies presented their Energy Scouts projects. This provided an opportunity to exchange ideas with other trainees and companies from different sectors.

The professional setting of the IHK provided a structured and pleasant presentation atmosphere.

Added value for training and companies

The project clearly showed how much potential there is in practical training work – both for personal development and for the company itself.

Practical project work

The trainees were able to gain initial experience in project management, work independently and analyze economic relationships in a practical manner.

Contribution to sustainability at UnionStahl

The project makes a concrete contribution to the further development of sustainable processes within the company. The focus is on topics such as CO₂ reduction, energy efficiency and modern intralogistics.

Conclusion: Training with a future

The Energy Scouts project “E instead of D” shows how training can actively contribute to sustainable development in the company. It combines theory and practice while promoting a sense of responsibility, teamwork and initiative.
