UnionStahl supplies CO₂-reduced XCarb® and weather-resistant steel components for pedestrian bridge

UnionStahl sustainable steel construction is at the heart of the project on the site of the former Sophia-Jacoba mine in Hückelhoven. An intergenerational park is being created there, bringing people together through play, sport and recreation. The new pedestrian bridge, which connects the Millicher Halde with shaft 3, is therefore a central element.

Material concept and UnionStahl sustainable steel construction

The bridge is designed as a semi-integral, four-span structure. Weatherproof steel is used for the superstructure and filigree supports. The red-brown patina picks up on the industrial history and ensures durable, low-maintenance structures.

UnionStahl sustainable steel construction in practice

UnionStahl processes the heavy plates: plasma cutting, laser cutting and oxyfuel cutting, followed by edging. In total, UnionStahl processes around 300 tons of steel.

CO₂-reduced XCarb® steel in use

UnionStahl processes XCarb® heavy plate from ArcelorMittal, which is made from recycled material and produced using 100% renewable energy in an electric arc furnace. This reduces CO₂ emissions by more than 60% compared to the conventional blast furnace route. In addition, the use of this emission-reduced steel has saved around 460 tons of CO₂ in the production of the required heavy plates alone(source).

Cooperation in the project

The offices of Werner Sobek and Doser Kempen Krause Ingenieure are planning the bridge. They optimized the use of materials by making structural adjustments. The Tholen-Trepels consortium is assembling the bridge on site. In addition, UnionStahl delivers the precisely manufactured components on time so that the assembly is efficient and low-emission.

Sustainability in public construction

The town of Hückelhoven stipulates binding sustainability criteria in the tender. Mayor Bernd Jansen explains:
“With this project, it was important for us to plan sustainably from the outset. That is why we are making a visible contribution to environmental protection through the tender.”(source)

Sebastian Witthaus, Head of Sales at ArcelorMittal, emphasizes the cooperation between all partners and stresses that projects like this show how CO₂-reduced steels can be used in practice today.

By using CO₂-reduced materials, weather-resistant steel and plasma, laser and oxyfuel cutting, UnionStahl sustainable steel construction ensures that the pedestrian bridge is functional, durable and resource-efficient.
