What is everyday working life like at one of Europe’s leading steel trading companies? Numerous schoolchildren from Moers and Duisburg were able to answer this question for themselves at UnionStahl’s open day on November 5, 2025. We opened our doors for a whole day and offered young people an exciting insight into the world of steel – from work in production or administration to training opportunities for talented young people.

A day full of impressions and discoveries

Curiosity was already high at the reception: in small groups, our employees guided the young people through the spacious halls and explained the various material processing stations. From flame cutting to milling and order picking, the visitors were able to experience first-hand how precisely manufactured components are produced from sheet steel.

The view of our modern production facilities and the dimensions of the stored steel sheets was particularly impressive. For many, it was the first time they had been able to experience the size and variety of steel so closely.

Direct exchange with our trainees

One highlight was the open exchange with our trainees, who talked about their day-to-day work. They talked about what makes training at UnionStahl special – such as the varied tasks, the informal working atmosphere and the opportunity to take on responsibility right from the start.

Whether as a wholesale and foreign trade management assistant, warehouse logistics specialist or construction mechanic – our apprenticeships offer a wide range of opportunities to enter the world of steel. Many pupils took the opportunity to ask specific questions and find out about internships or apprenticeships.

“We want to show that steel is exciting,” emphasized Kerstin Luhn, Head of Training. “An apprenticeship at UnionStahl is the first step towards a secure future with real development opportunities.”

Experience technology and get to know job profiles

But the open day offered more than just information. It made training tangible. The young people were able to ask questions and find out what skills are required in the respective professions.

This gave them a realistic picture of how varied everyday working life is at UnionStahl: from organization in the office to working with state-of-the-art technology in production and in the warehouse.

Commitment to young talent in the region

UnionStahl attaches great importance to getting young people interested in technical and commercial professions at an early age. With events such as the open day, we want to show pupils from the Moers and Duisburg region what career opportunities the steel industry has to offer – right on their doorstep.

Conclusion: A successful day with prospects>/h2>

The open day at UnionStahl was a complete success. It provided young people with valuable guidance when choosing a career and showed just how diverse the world of steel is.

A big thank you to all visitors – and of course to our dedicated team, who made this day possible with their openness, knowledge and enthusiasm.

We are already looking forward to the next time!
