HIC-resistant plate
In the petrochemical industry, plant is exposed to substances containing hydrogen sulphide. As a result of the released hydrogen, this leads to corrosion on vessels and piping. Cracking caused by hydrogen is the result – “Hydrogen Induced Cracking” (HIC).
To counteract this corrosion, rolling mills developed sour gas-resistant steels. These steels are characterised by their low sulphur and phosphorous content and high purity. The plates are normalised in a furnace. This produces a homogeneous and fine-grained microstructure. The steel is therefore less susceptible to hydrogen corrosion and cracking is reduced.
The sour gas-resistant steels are tested for HIC resistance compliant with NACE TM 0284. Samples are taken from the plate for this purpose and placed for 96 hours in a saturated hydrogen sulphide solution. The samples are then metallographically examined. Cracking susceptibility is evaluated using the criteria CLR (crack length ratio), CTR (crack thickness ratio) and CSR (crack sensitivity ratio).
If the application demands corrosion resistance, UnionStahl is. Your strong partner. We are specialised in sour gas-resistant plate and stock them in ASTM A/ASME SA 516 Grade 60, 65 and 70. The heavy plates are covered by test certificates 3.2 LR. We are the only warehouse stockist in Europe that also stocks HIC-resistant steels in P355NL2, P355NH and P355GH.
The plate manufacturer guarantees sour gas resistance in the normalised and stress-relief heat treated condition.
All heavy plates comply with EN 10029 Class C thickness tolerance.
