CREUSABRO 4800 in use
The initial situation for CREUSABRO 4800 steel: Large dimensions and long service life.
For more than 15 years, UnionStahl has maintained a close business relationship with a company that is a world leader in tunnel construction. This partner used to purchase sheets and flame-cut blanks in various grades. However, the trend in tunnel construction is moving towards drill heads that are continuously getting bigger. The waste produced at the drill head is conveyed away to the rear via wear-resistant pipes. Therefore, the diameter of the pipes must increase in line with the drill head. Otherwise, it is impossible to remove the waste. It is also important to understand that long service lives are an absolute must, especially in the field of tunnel construction. Consequently, the unique challenge lies in the combination of large dimensions and long service lives.
The solution: Customised production of pipes made of CREUSABRO 4800
UnionStahl developed a customised solution with the customer, in which the pipes are manufactured individually from CREUSABRO 4800 wear plates. This material keeps future wear to a bare minimum. UnionStahl manufactures polygonally bevelled pipes formed from heavy plates with wall thicknesses of up to 25 mm, which are welded into segments and fitted with flanges in line with the customer’s requirements. UnionStahl carries out the following work for this purpose: Plasma cutting, polygonal edging, longitudinal seam welding, welding with loose/fixed flanges as well as workshop painting.
The benefits: The special material properties of CREUSABRO 4800 steel
Unlike water-quenched and tempered wear steels, for example, CREUSABRO materials have special properties, such as hardening of the material under operating conditions by up to 70 HB. This significantly extends the service life.
The bottom line: CREUSABRO 4800 as best practice for pipelines
CREUSABRO is a primary material produced by Industeel and distributed exclusively by UnionStahl in the DACH region (Germany, Austria, and Switzerland), the Benelux countries and Hungary. Its excellent material properties offer the best prerequisites for application in the demanding work environment of tunnelling. These positive experiences give reason to believe that further application areas in mining can be opened up. One example is diamond mining, in particular the suction pipe segments.
